People come into our offices all the time and tell me they want Invisalign. Most of the time, what they actually mean is clear aligners. They just don’t know there’s a difference, because for a lot of folks the two words are the same thing.

I get why. Invisalign was one of the first, it’s been advertised for years, and the name stuck. It became the word people reach for when they picture clear plastic trays instead of metal braces.

But Invisalign is a brand. Clear aligners are the category. That sounds like a technicality. It isn’t, and it changes how you should pick who treats you.

Is Invisalign the same as clear aligners?

No. Invisalign is a clear aligner, but not every clear aligner is Invisalign. All Invisalign trays are clear aligners. Not all clear aligners are Invisalign.

The confusion makes sense. Invisalign launched in the late 1990s and spent years as the only name most people had heard. So the brand turned into shorthand for the treatment, the same way people say they’ll Google something when they mean search the web.

How one brand became the word

You already do this with other products without thinking about it. You grab a Kleenex when it’s a store-brand tissue. You put a Band-Aid on a cut, and half the time the box didn’t say Band-Aid. People say they’re going to Xerox something on a copier that isn’t a Xerox. One brand gets popular enough that its name quietly becomes the word for the whole category.

Linguists have a term for it: a genericized trademark. It explains why the mix-up is so common, and why nobody should feel silly for making it. You hear Invisalign, you picture clear trays, and you assume that’s the only option. Reasonable. Just incomplete.

The clear aligner brands, and how they differ

There isn’t one clear aligner. There are several systems, and they aren’t identical. The plastic is different. The attachments are different. The lab process, the fit, and the price can all vary. What stays the same across all of them is the basic idea: a series of clear trays, each one nudging your teeth a little closer to the finish line, swapped out every week or two. The approach is well studied. A 2024 systematic review found clear aligners effectively correct many common bite problems.

What changes from one system to the next is the engineering behind the trays and the planning software the orthodontist uses to map your case. That second part matters more than most people realize.

Why we only say Invisalign when we mean it

Here’s where we’re a little particular, and I think it matters. We don’t call every clear aligner Invisalign. If we tell you you’re in Invisalign, it’s because you’re in Invisalign, the actual product from that actual company. When we use a different system, we call it what it is.

Using one brand’s name as a label for everything is convenient. It’s also inaccurate, and I’d rather be accurate with you about what’s in your mouth. You’re paying for a specific treatment. You should know exactly what it is.

Trust the provider, not the brand

A clear aligner is a tool. It doesn’t decide where your teeth go. The orthodontist does. The trays only carry out the treatment plan, and that plan comes from the person running your case, not the logo on the box.

When you trust the provider, you stop worrying about which brand is on your trays. You picked the person. You let them pick the tool. That’s the right order, and it’s the same order you’d use for anything that actually matters.
