Living With Braces

Gum is the classic braces question, and the classic answer, "absolutely not," deserves a little nuance. Sticky, sugary gum really is a bad idea with braces. But sugar-free gum is a different story, and if you wear clear aligners the rules change entirely. Let me sort out what's actually risky, what's fine, and why.
Why regular gum and braces don't mix
The problem with ordinary chewing gum is that it's sticky and it's sugary, and braces don't like either. Sticky gum wraps around brackets and wires, and as you chew it can bend the wire out of shape or pull a bracket loose. That means an unplanned trip back to see us, and a bent wire can quietly slow your treatment. On top of that, sugary gum coats the teeth and feeds the bacteria that cause white spots and cavities, exactly the spots that are already hard to clean around brackets.
What about sugar-free gum?
Here's where the old blanket ban softens. Sugar-free gum is much less sticky and, without the sugar, doesn't feed cavity bacteria. Some orthodontists are comfortable with patients chewing it in moderation, and it has a couple of small perks: it stimulates saliva, which helps rinse the mouth, and gum sweetened with xylitol can actually reduce cavity-causing bacteria. That said, even sugar-free gum can tug on wires if you go overboard, so the smart approach is occasional, gentle chewing, and a quick check with your orthodontist first, since recommendations vary.
Chewing gum with clear aligners
Clear aligners flip the situation. Because you take the trays out to eat anything, you never chew gum while wearing them, doing so would gum up and damage the aligner. But the flip side is a real advantage: when your trays are out, you can chew sugar-free gum freely, then brush and pop the aligners back in. Most people say "Invisalign," though that's just one brand of clear aligner; the same rule applies to Angel Aligners and any other system. Some patients even find that chewing briefly after switching to a new tray helps it seat and eases soreness.
| Gum type | With braces | With aligners (trays out) |
|---|---|---|
| Regular sugary gum | Avoid | Not recommended (sugar) |
| Sugar-free gum | Occasionally, if your orthodontist okays it | Fine, trays must be out |
