Short answer: Yes. Plain, cool or room-temperature water is the one thing you can drink with your aligners in, and you should drink plenty of it. Everything else, coffee, tea, soda, juice, alcohol, even hot water, means taking the trays out first. Water is the exception because it doesn’t stain, feed bacteria, or warp the plastic.

This is one of the most common questions I get from new aligner patients, usually within the first week. The 22-hours-a-day rule makes people nervous about every sip, and that’s fair. So here’s the simple version: water is your friend, and just about everything else waits until the trays are out.
Why water is fine
Clear aligners fit tightly against your teeth, which is exactly what lets them move teeth, and also exactly what makes drinks tricky. Whatever you sip gets held in that thin space between the plastic and your enamel. With plain water, that’s a non-issue. Water has no sugar to feed bacteria, no acid to erode enamel, and no pigment to stain your teeth or cloud the trays. It just washes through.
So not only can you drink water with your aligners in, you should. Staying hydrated helps with the mild dry mouth some people notice when they first start wearing trays.
What to take them out for
Pretty much everything that isn’t plain water. The reasons fall into three buckets: sugar and acid that cause decay, pigments that stain, and heat that warps. Here’s the quick guide:

The hot-drink warning
Of all of these, heat is the one I most want you to remember, because it can quietly ruin an aligner. The plastic is designed to hold a precise shape at mouth temperature. A hot coffee, tea, or even hot water can soften and warp it, and a warped aligner no longer fits the way your treatment plan needs it to. Take the trays out for anything hot, and let a very hot drink cool for a minute before you pop them back in.
Easy rule to live by: if it isn’t plain, cool water, take the trays out. Then rinse your mouth and the aligners with water before putting them back. That one habit prevents almost every aligner drink problem.
Simple habits that keep trays clear
Keep a travel case with you so removing your aligners for a coffee is effortless, not a reason to cheat and sip through them. Rinse the trays under cool water when you take them out and before you put them back. Brush your teeth after meals when you can, and rinse your mouth with water when you can’t. And drink water freely throughout the day. It keeps you comfortable and helps the whole system stay clean.

Does drinking water help while wearing aligners?

Should I rinse my aligners after eating or drinking?
