Costs & Insurance

Delta Dental is one of the biggest dental insurers in the country, so this is a question we field constantly: will my plan help pay for orthodontics? The honest answer is that it depends on your specific plan, but the pattern is predictable once you know what to look for. Here's how Delta Dental orthodontic coverage usually works and exactly what to check on yours.
How Delta Dental orthodontic coverage usually works
Delta Dental offers several plan types, including Delta Dental PPO, Delta Dental Premier, and DeltaCare managed plans. The details differ, but orthodontic benefits tend to share a few features. Coverage is typically a percentage, often 50%, of the treatment fee. There's a lifetime maximum for orthodontics, separate from your annual dental maximum, usually somewhere between $1,000 and $2,500 per person. And it's a one-time well: once you use it, it's gone, whether on braces or aligners.
What to check on your specific plan
| Look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is orthodontics included at all? | Not every plan has an ortho benefit |
| Lifetime maximum | The ceiling on what they'll ever pay |
| Age limit | Some plans cover only dependents under 19 |
| Waiting period | A few plans delay ortho benefits after enrollment |
| In-network status | In-network care usually costs you less |
You can find most of this in your member portal at deltadental.com or by calling the number on your card. Or hand it to us and we'll read the plan for you.
Does it cover clear aligners too?
Usually, yes. Delta Dental generally treats clear aligners the same as braces, since both are orthodontic treatment. That means your benefit typically applies whether you choose metal braces or clear aligners. One naming note: most people say "Invisalign," but that's a single brand of clear aligner. Your insurance cares about the category, orthodontic treatment, not the brand name, so the coverage is the same either way.
Making the most of your benefit
We're in-network with most Delta Dental PPO plans, and we handle the paperwork so your benefit gets applied correctly. Whatever insurance doesn't cover, we break into interest-free monthly payments, often with a low down payment.
