What Vivera retainers are

Vivera retainers are custom-made clear retainers that fit snugly over your teeth, much like a clear aligner but designed to hold rather than move. What sets them apart is the material: they are made from a stronger, multi-layer plastic than a standard clear retainer, which makes them more resistant to cracking and wear. Because they are custom-fabricated from a scan of your teeth, you can also order additional sets, which is handy since a spare on hand means you are never caught without one.

How Vivera compares to other retainers

There are three main retainer types, and each has a place:

• Clear retainers (Vivera and Essix): nearly invisible and comfortable; Vivera uses a tougher material than a basic Essix
• Hawley retainers: the classic wire-and-acrylic design; very durable and adjustable, but more noticeable

Caring for your Vivera retainers

• Rinse them every time you take them out, and brush gently with a soft brush and mild soap or a retainer cleaner
• Avoid hot water and dishwashers, which can warp the plastic
• Always store them in their case, never a napkin, which is how most retainers get thrown away by accident
