Choosing an Orthodontist

6 min read · By Dr. Kevin Baharvand, Diplomate, American Board of Orthodontics · Choosing an Orthodontist

Patient scheduling an orthodontist appointment directly, no referral needed

Short answer: Yes. You can go straight to an orthodontist without a referral from your dentist. Orthodontics is a self-referral specialty, so you can book a consultation directly. The only thing worth checking first is your dental insurance, since a few plans ask for a referral before they pay, even though the orthodontist does not require one.

The short answer: no referral required

Plenty of people assume they need their dentist to send them to an orthodontist, the way a family doctor refers you to a specialist. For orthodontics, that is not how it works. You can pick up the phone, book a consultation, and walk in, all without a referral or any prior approval.

At Elate, new patients across Frisco and The Colony schedule with us directly every day. Whether you are curious about braces, clear aligners, or just want an expert to look at your smile and tell you where you stand, you do not need anyone’s permission to start.

Why you can book directly

Orthodontics is what is called a self-referral specialty. Orthodontists are trained specifically to diagnose and correct alignment and bite issues, so they are equipped to evaluate you from the first visit without a general dentist screening you first. There is no clinical gatekeeper step because the specialist can do the full assessment themselves.

Your general dentist still plays an important role, of course. They handle your cleanings, fillings, and everyday oral health. But when it comes to moving teeth and aligning jaws, you are welcome to go straight to the people who do that all day. If you want the fuller picture of how the two roles differ, we cover it in orthodontist versus dentist.

The one thing to check: your insurance

Here is the small caveat. While no orthodontist requires a referral, a handful of dental insurance plans do, purely as a billing rule. The pattern usually looks like this:

  • PPO plans almost always let you see any orthodontist with orthodontic benefits, no referral needed.
  • DHMO or managed-care plans sometimes require a referral or an in-network selection before they will pay their share.

So the referral, when it comes up at all, is an insurance formality, not a medical one. A two-minute call to your insurer clears it up. And if you do not have insurance, none of this applies. You can read more about that in our guide to orthodontist costs without insurance.

The benefits of going direct

Skipping the referral step is not just about convenience. It can genuinely help:

  • Earlier detection. An orthodontist can spot alignment or jaw-growth issues early, sometimes before all the permanent teeth are in. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first check by around age 7, which you can book directly through our pediatric orthodontic care.
  • A plan built for you. Going straight to the specialist means your evaluation and options come from the person who will actually treat you.
  • Less delay. If you already know you have crowding, a gap, or a bite that bothers you, there is no reason to wait on a referral to get started.

Quick check: before your first visit, call the number on your dental insurance card and ask two things: do I have orthodontic benefits, and do you require a referral? That is all it takes to know exactly where you stand.

What happens at your first visit

At Elate, the first orthodontic visit is free, and it is designed to give you clarity, not a hard sell. Here is what to expect:

  • A comprehensive exam. We take digital scans and X-rays as needed to assess your teeth and jaw alignment.
  • A plain conversation about options. We walk through what would work for your case, from braces to clear aligners, and why.
  • Real numbers. You get the cost and any financing options up front, so there are no surprises.

If you want to make the most of that visit, our list of questions to ask at a consultation is a handy thing to bring along. And for the age-7 recommendation and general guidance, the American Association of Orthodontists is a reliable resource.

You do not need anyone’s permission to take care of your smile. Book the consultation, and let a specialist tell you what is possible.

No referral needed. Book directly with us.

Your first visit is free and gives you a clear picture of your options. Schedule whenever you are ready.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral from my dentist to see an orthodontist?

No. Orthodontics is a self-referral specialty, which means you can book directly. You do not need your general dentist to send you, and you do not need any prior approval to come in for a consultation.

Will my insurance still cover treatment if I go without a referral?

Usually, but it depends on your plan. Most PPO dental plans with orthodontic benefits do not require a referral. Some DHMO plans do ask for one before they pay, so it is worth a quick call to your insurer to confirm. The referral is an insurance formality in those cases, not a clinical requirement.

Can my child see an orthodontist without visiting the dentist first?

Yes. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check by around age 7, and you can schedule that directly. Early visits are often just monitoring, but they catch issues while they are easiest to guide.

Should I keep seeing my regular dentist too?

Definitely. An orthodontist handles tooth movement and bite correction, while your general dentist keeps up your cleanings, fillings, and overall oral health. The two roles work best side by side, and we are glad to coordinate with your dentist.

What actually happens at the first orthodontic visit?

At Elate your first visit is free and includes a full exam, digital scans, and X-rays as needed, then a plain conversation about your options and what they cost. You leave with a clear plan, not a sales pitch.

Is it faster to go straight to an orthodontist?

Often, yes. Skipping the referral step means you can start sooner, which matters if you already know you have crowding, a gap, or a bite issue you want addressed.
