Some overbite is normal. The upper front teeth should overlap the lowers a little. A deep bite is when they cover most of the lower teeth, sometimes far enough that the lower teeth touch the gum behind the uppers.

Over years that can wear the front teeth and irritate the gums. Correcting it means leveling the bite, not just straightening teeth, and with braces that often involves elastics.
